Lusaka, 18 June, 2021.
The United Pan Africanist Movement (UPAM) Zambian Chapter has received with profound sadness and deep sorrow news of the death of Zambia ‘ s first Republican President and last surviving founder of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), His Excellency Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda.
On behalf of UPAM Zambia Chapter and on my own behalf, we join the immediate family, the government and the people of Zambia in sadness and mourning the passing of a devoted leader and a great statesman. UPAM recognizes Dr. Kaunda ‘s role and contributions to the liberation struggle in Africa that led to the independence of Zambia and other African countries, especially his unwavering support to thousands of refugees during their independence struggle and quest for freedom.
Dr. Kaunda will also be remembered and celebrated for his significant contribution to the fight against the HIV and AIDS pandemic especially at a time when the pandemic was considered a taboo and people living with HIV were stigmatized.
Today, we recommit ourselves to building the united and prosperous Africa of Kaunda ‘ s vision of love , peace, justice and innovation for Africa’s development.
May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace
