African Union leaders Macky Sall and Moussa Faki Mahamat have run out of road after Russia’s President Vladimir Putin blamed Western sanctions for the blockade on grain and fertilizers stocks to African countries at the Ukrainian port of Odessa. The two African leaders arrived in Moscow on June 3 to appeal for the suspension of blockades on cereals and other key commodities, and negotiate their safe transportation in the Black Sea.
Following yesterday’s meeting with Putin in Moscow, Sall revealed the Russian leader’s willingness to ship ‘Russian’ wheat and fertilizers to Africa if sanctions on the country are lifted.
“I call on all partners to lift sanctions targeting wheat and fertilizer”, tweeted Sall.
In another tweet, Moussa Faki revealed that “the historical, strong fraternal relations between Russia and Africa” were revisited in the meeting. The African Union has emphasized its support of compromise and dialogue to make way for a negotiated settlement in the interests of global peace and stability.
