Evictions of Maasai people residing in the Loliondo Division of Tanzania’s Ngorongoro District are still a threat to the indigenous African tribe famously known for preserving their ethnic culture. The recent granting of licenses to Otterlo Business Corporation, a hunting tourist corporation, may see 4,000 square kilometers of territory considered ancestral land by the Maasai tribe, being ceased by the government, a threat that has been ongoing since 1992.
It is reported that the Tanzanian government, as well as Otterlo Business Corporation owned by Dubai’s royals have never sought the Maasai’s free, prior, and informed consent for hunting on their property. The government is threatening to expel the Maasai from 1,500 square kilometers of land. During the dry season, the affected terrain serves as crucial grazing land for Maasai livestock. The land seizure may see disruptions in the culture and economy of the Maasai people.
