President Joe Biden may require supernatural intervention in order to pass new voting rights and police reform legislation. But if he can’t get it, he’s at least trying to enlist the Divine Nine’s assistance. The Divine Nine, formally known as the National Pan-Hellenic Council, is a group of nine fraternities and sororities, as well as their alumni. The organization has been in existence since 1930. Also known as the D9, it is a collaborative umbrella council composed of historically African American fraternities and sororities whose members have been at the forefront of civil rights movements across the United States.
It is, without a doubt, the most powerful group in the African-American community. And, until today, they’ve been largely underutilized by administrations seeking to connect with Black voters. The Biden administration is attempting to reverse that, stepping up outreach to the group as it tries to reassure a key voting bloc that is growing increasingly dissatisfied with the lack of movement on key issues.
