President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa evaded questions on Friday about a multi-million-dollar cash robbery that has put him on the defensive in a bitter intra-party feud. His planned appearances in parliament were overshadowed for a second day by opposition hecklers, who fought with security while some members were forcefully taken out. President Rhamaphosa answered questions from reporters for over an hour after his parliamentary appearance, but he remained firm in his refusal to speak about the matter.
A former intelligence chief submitted a police report last week stating that criminals stole $4 million (about R63.4 million) in cash from Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farmhouse, where the money was hidden under mattresses. Ramaphosa is now accused of concealing his involvement in kidnapping and money laundering following the burglary.
