A medical student who allegedly staged his own kidnapping in order to demand his parents pay a ransom has been detained by police in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.The 23-year-old is charged with going missing on Sunday and then calling his mother to demand 70,000 Kenyan shillings ($593; £494) in ransom money.
The first installment of the ransom was paid on Wednesday, but according to the police, the student went on a drinking binge outside of town with a woman who drugged his drink and stole the money.He allegedly requested and received the second installment of the ransom on Thursday, but was quickly apprehended and the money was discovered hidden in his shoes.According to the police, the student admitted to spending the money intended for last semester in order to raise additional money.
The suspect is awaiting his court appearance.
