According to the authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, protests against UN forces in the country’s east have resulted in at least 15 fatalities.According to police, three UN peacekeepers and seven demonstrators perished in the city of Butembo in the region of North Kivu.
A little more than 200 kilometers (125 miles) to the south, in the provincial capital Goma, the administration had earlier claimed that at least five people had died.In light of the M23 rebel movement’s revival, the marchers are calling for the withdrawal of the peacekeeping force (Monusco), which they claim has failed to bring peace to the area.
