According to the National Council for Civil Defense of Sudan, heavy rains and flooding have killed at least 50 people and injured scores more since May. Brigadier-General Abdul-Jalil Abdul-Rahman told state television that some of the deceased drowned or passed away in their homes.
More than 7,000 dwellings have been damaged with images released by the Sudanese official media showing submerged and collapsed buildings. Emergency shelter is in demand as thousands have been left homeless.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, flooding has affected more than 136,000 people since May, and bad road conditions make it impossible for supplies to get to some places.
Some of the worst-affected regions are the states of Kordofan, Darfur, and White Nile. East Africa continues to endure extreme weather events this year, including flooding, protracted dry periods, and severe droughts.
