A teenage girl who was a member of the Constantin Scouts passed away on Tuesday from severe burn injuries she got while rescuing kids from recent wildfires, local media has reported. The 18-year-old Dounia Bouhelassa is now being lauded a hero on Algerian social media after saved numerous kids from a park in the eastern city of El Kala.
It is reported that several children making up the scouts troop led by their leader Dounia were strolling through the woods last week when they became enveloped in flames. Eight of the children sustained injuries, and Dounia later passed away while receiving medical care at a hospital in Constantine, where she was born.
The wildfires that have ravaged Algeria’s northeast for days have consumed farms, crops and cork forests, causing more than 40 fatalities and 200 injuries in their wake.
