Prominent Liberian scholar, Dr. Joseph Saye Guanue succumbed to a protracted illness on Monday 29 August, local press reported. The writer, professor, historian, diplomat, and politician was born in September 1940 and was announced dead on Monday morning at the United Methodist hospital, in Ganta City Monrovia, Liberia.
He authored many publications including popular textbooks on Liberian history: The Inaugural Addresses of the Presidents of Liberia; Liberian history since 1857: A reference for high school students; Liberian history up to 1847; Introduction to Liberian Government: The First Republic and the People’s Redemption Council; Liberian history before 1857: A reference for elementary pupils; and A Short History of the First Liberian Republic.
Guannu is remembered for being the country’s prominent historian whose work was widely respected in politics and diplomacy. His work continues to be sought after for insights into Liberian history.
