Tete Dijana, a male South African runner, took first place in the 2022 Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 28 August. In a remarkable period of 5 hours, 30 minutes, and 35 seconds, the security guard from the North West province was first to reach the finish line at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Edward Mothibi, a member of Dijana’s Nedbank running club team who attempted to defend his 2019 Comrades championship, finished in second place.
In the 95th running of the Comrades Marathon, athletes travelled to Durban to compete over a 90km course.
In what is referred to as the ‘ultimate human race’, Russian runner Alexandra Morozova was in the lead among the female competitors. The ultra-marathon, which was suspended for two years during the severe lockdown, came back this year with more than 14 000 competitors.
Runners gathered at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, on Saturday making last-minute ticket purchases for their marathons and planned physiotherapy appointments.
A coffee table book co-written by Brad Morgan and Steve Camp called “In Your Stride: 100 Years of the Comrades Marathon” was one of the exhibitions at the expo released to commemorate the Comrades Marathon Association’s 100th anniversary.
According to Morgan, the book details the Marathon’s advancements from its inception. Unlike other Comrades publications, he claims, this one is loaded with images rather than a lot of text and captures the spirit of what the Comrades Marathon is all about.
“…So I think we’ve really got it right with that and certainly the feedback that we’ve got from the runners has been fantastic. We’re really proud that we’re able to put the book together and also very honoured that Comrades entrusted Steve and I do this book,” explains Morgan.
