A new coin design with the text inscribed in each of South Africa’s official languages has been approved by the cabinet. Over the following ten years, there will be an annual switch of the official languages. South Africa will change the design of its coins for a fourth time, the last time being in 1989.
In a statement, the cabinet described how the new design will appear for each denomination.”The word “South Africa” will be written in all of the official languages on one side of the coin. The R5 coin will be in three languages, the R2 coin in two languages, the 50c, 20c, and 10c coins in three languages, and the R1 coin in just one language “The cabinet statement was partially read. There is currently no prototype design for the new coins, which will go into circulation the following year.
There are 11 official languages in South Africa: English, Sesotho, Xitsonga, Siswati, Tshivenda, isiXhosa, Zulu, and Afrikaans.
