The new world records were established by Tobi Amusan, Mondo Duplantis, and Sydney McLaughlin at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 were approved on Tuesday 20 September 2022. The records were established by the athletes at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA, in July.
Tomi Amusan’s 12.12 minutes record has ratified by the World Athletics as a world record in the women’s 100m hurdles. She is now officially confirmed as the first Nigerian athlete to hold a world record.
The global U20 mark of 9.94 was established by Letsile Tebogo, a Botswana sprinter, in the men’s 100m heats, Amusan’s 12.12 in the women’s 100m hurdles semifinals, Duplantis’ 6.21m in the men’s pole vault final, and McLaughlin’s 50.68 in the women’s 400m hurdles finals.
The 25-year-old Amusan stunned the world by breaking the previous world mark held by American Keni Harrison (12.20 seconds) in the semi-finals of the World Championships in Oregon, USA, before winning gold in the final at the Olympics. Olympic gold medalist Athing Mu expanded her already remarkable credentials by winning a world championship on the same day.
A 20 year-old Black middle distance runner Athing Mu, from America, narrowly defeated Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain to win the 800m gold. She is now the youngest woman in history to have won both an individual track and field world championship as well as an Olympic crown.
Yakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway was the first competitor to cross the finish line in the 500-meter final for men, with Jacob Krop of Kenya taking second and Oscar Chelimo of Uganda taking third.Additionally, Armand Duplantis of Sweden broke the previous record for his sport to round off the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Washington. The athlete, 22, easily navigated a 6 meter 21 course.
