The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported this week that the number of patients newly admitted to the hospital for COVID-19 noted an 82% drop from the peak number of hospitalizations witnessed during the original Omicron-fueled wave in early January.
This comes as there have been 613,367,822 confirmed cases of COVID-19 globally, and the number of people killed by the coronavirus now stands at 6,530,976.
The pandemic is not over, but statistics from the top 10 most affected countries also show a major decline. The U.S. reported an average of 161,200 new cases this week, with 1,355 deaths. India reported a seven-day average of 5,383 new cases, with 20 deaths.
France remains in third place, averaging 90,066 new cases and 81 fatalities. Brazil is in fourth — reporting an average of 7,231 new cases this week and 56 deaths.
Germany reported an average of 50,800 new cases and 93 deaths this week. South Korea reported an average of 29,081 new cases and 56 deaths.
The United Kingdom averaged 5 new cases and 1 fatality. Italy this week averaged 49,573 new cases and 106 dead.
Japan stays in ninth place— reporting an average of 81,719 new cases with 181 fatalities. Russia averaged 53,335 new cases this week and 104 deaths.
