The University of Juba in South Sudan voted out Arabic as a compulsory subject for First-year students. On September 4th, 2022, the senators of the University of Juba dropped Arabic as a compulsory course for university beginners,making it an optional subject with Kiswahili, Mandarin/Chinese, and French.
In an announcement posted on Facebook, the university stated, “senators of the university have voted out Arabic as a compulsory subject for First Year Students. Students will have choices of Arabic, Swahili, French and Mandarin/Chinese.”
The University of Juba is an English-language public university founded in 1975 under by the former Vice president of and President of Southern Sudan, Abel Alier Kwai.
