In spite of western sanctions, Russia has continued to export its oil through Egypt, it is reported. The North African country is said to be receiving Russian oil cargo ships at Al Harman, a small port in the Red Sea. The oil is then mixed with Egyptian crude oil before being transferred in barrels to the industrial zone and port in Al-‘Ain al-Sokhna located in the Suez Governorate to obscure its origins, claims western media.
American news outlet Bloomberg, has described this as a dark activity is happening between Egypt and Russia.
According to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), India, China, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Turkey increased the imports of crude oil from Russia since the beginning of the Ukraine crisis. The EU payments to Russia for energy imports were reported to have passed 100 billion euros between February and October, reported CREA.
