Ethiopia celebrated its national flag day on Tuesday, an annual event set aside to encourage patriotism and unity.
Apart from its formal use, the Ethiopian flag which is one of the ancient flags of the world is also used during funerals, wedding ceremonies and religious and other places.
It was adopted as a banner before 1853 and we officially adopted on 31 October 1912 as the national flag.
Many African countries adopted the green ,yellow and red color from their Ethiopian flag upon their own independence in the following decades.
Colour and symbolism
• Green: “represents the richness and the fertility of our land as well as hope ”
• Yellow: “represents religious freedom and peace.”
• Red: “represents the sacrifice of our fathers, who spilled their blood in defense of Ethiopia “
