Popular South African performer and producer, DJ Sumbody, was fatally shot in the Sandton area of Woodmead in Johannesburg on Sunday morning, 20 November. The late 38-year-old Pretoria-based musician was buried at his family homestead in Limpopo. DJ Sumbody, real name Oupa John Sefok was known for being one of the inventors of the South African house music genre Amapiano
The man argued to be one of the founders of a new South African house music genre, Amapiano, died in a hail of bullets along with one of his bodyguards, Sibu Walter Mokoena. The shocking death immediately sparked rumors of probable gang involvement of the deceased, rumors which business partner Tshepi Ranamane has dispelled. Ranamane revealed that the producer had 3 attempts on his life and was constantly scared for his life, it is said.
At the funeral held on Saturday, growing calls for police minister Bheki Cele to call a 72-hour deadline to find DJ Sumbody’s killers were heard from influential members of society. The president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Julius Malema, who was among the public figures who attended Mr. Sekof’s funeral tweeted, “Oupa, we failed you. Like many others, you are a victim of a mafia state, failed state. Robala mfanaka mara I’m not OK.”
Reports say it is suspected that the killers are from Pretoria where the DJ lived.
