Two Facebook accounts purporting to offer loans in the name of the First Lady of Kenya, Rachel Ruto, have been exposed. According to an independent fact-checking organization PesaCheck, the loan initiatives including a ‘Hustler Fund’ associated with the discovered accounts are a hoax, and so are the accounts imposters.
One of the opportunistic scammers mentioned another legitimate organization, the Mama Care Initiative led by one of Kenya’s female legislators. This Facebook page under the name ‘Mama Rachel Ruto loans’ claimed to offer loans ranging from KSh10,000,00 to KSh850,000,00.
Another account assigned as Rachel Chebet Ruttoh is said to offer ‘Hustler Fund’ soft loans ranging from KSh10,000 to KSh350,000. First-time applicants are allowed to apply for up to KSh100,000, claims the advert on Facebook.
In October, President William Ruto said the KSh50 billion Hustler Fund he promised during campaigns will be up and running by December 2022. However, disbursement of the Hustler Fund has not begun. There is also no information on the alleged loans on the official and verified Facebook page of the First Lady of Kenya.
The Head of the Presidential Communication Service, David Mugonyi, denounced the accounts as fake, it is said.
