New Delhi (India), 13 January: Electric vehicles hogged the limelight on the first day of India’s flagship motor show Auto Expo 2023 with the likes of Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia, Tata Motors and MG Motor showcasing their futuristic products, while also committing to invest in sustainable mobility.
With an aim to decarbonize Indian Auto Industry and achieve Carbon Neutrality, Maruti Suzuki charges up India fleet with concept electric SUV “EVX”.
However, It’s seems not enough, there are lots to be done. The electric vehicles alone can’t be the solution for achieving carbonneutrality in India, Toshihiro Suzuki, president of Maruti Suzuki also admits.
Toshihiro Suzuki said, “the company’s shift to a more eco-friendly fleet would also include cars that run on compressed natural gas or fuels blended with ethanol ”.
“Looking at the power supply situation here, India needs other options,” he continued.
The show, returning after three years having been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, opened with the global premiere of Suzuki Motor Corporation’s concept electric SUV ‘eVX’ which is slated to hit the market by 2025.
On the other hand, Hyundai Motor India launched its all-electric model Ioniq 5 at an introductory price of Rs 44.95 lakh (ex-showroom) for the first
500 customers in the presence of Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan. The model is based on the company’s dedicated battery electric vehicle platform E-GMP.
Another carmaker Kia India, which unveiled an all-electric SUV Concept Kia Concept EV9, said it plans to invest Rs 2,000 crore over the next four years to scale up its presence in the electric vehicle segment.
Kia India Vice-President and Head – Sales & Marketing – Hardeep Singh Brar said the company’s Andhra Pradesh-based manufacturing plant is ready to roll out EVs.
Given the limited number of participating brands in 2023, it is understandable that there was not much left for Day 2 following yesterday’s slew of unveilings. However, while the surprises were few in number, they sure offered up a lot of excitement.
After all the Auto Expo – The Motor Show , this year was a showcase unlike the previous versions of the biennial event, owing to the profound presence of automobiles based on clean energy including the Hydrogen fuel cell technology.
Demonstrating the future of mobility in India with an eye on sustainability, the British automotive company also showcased new energy vehicles at the biennial automobile showcase, including its hydrogen fuel-cell MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle), EUNIQ 7.
While the Indian multinational automotive company ‘TATA Motors’ didn’t remain behind when it came to revealing its own Hydrogen fuel cell powered product. Instead of a car, though, theirs was a truck, the Prima E.55S. They showcased it along side two additional eco-friendly truck models at the Auto Expo.
Unveiling the Hydrogen fuel-powered version of their SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) NEXO, the Korean automobile company also forayed into the future of a future with cleaner fuels. All the major brands showcased their latest cars and advanced technologies at the event.
Keeping the trend of EVs and sustainable mobility, almost every exhibitor is ready to welcome visitors. The event will be open for the general public till January 18.
