DELHI October 7, 2024- A significant meeting took place between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in New Delhi, during which several crucial agreements were signed. Financial Assistance: A Major Step Towards Maldives’ Development

During the press conference, President Muizzu expressed deep gratitude for India’s timely assistance, saying, “India has always been the first to extend help in our time of need. Whether it was the 2014 water crisis or the COVID-19 pandemic, India has shown readiness every time.”

This financial support is vital for the Maldivian economy, which is primarily dependent on tourism and was severely affected post-COVID. Such assistance will provide much-needed stability. Comparatively, India’s financial aid to **Sri Lanka** earlier also reflects its regional leadership and commitment to mutual cooperation.

Infrastructure Cooperation: Strengthening Foundations for Growth

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of the **Greater Malé Connectivity Project (GMCP)**, the largest infrastructure project India is undertaking in the Maldives. Modi noted, “Our infrastructure projects will be a milestone in Maldives’ development. We are connecting Malé with nearby islands, improving connectivity and creating new economic opportunities.”

In addition to the GMCP, India’s support for airports, ports, and residential projects will enhance Maldives’ commercial and economic potential.

President Muizzu, recognizing the value of these projects, added, *”With India’s partnership, we are not only improving our infrastructure but also exploring new possibilities in tourism and trade.”*

Maritime Security: Ensuring Collective Safety

Given the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean, both nations placed strong emphasis on maritime security and defense cooperation.  For Maldives, challenges like illegal fishing, drug trafficking, and terrorism remain critical issues. India will provide the necessary defense equipment and technical support to help Maldives address these threats.

Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment, saying, “India understands Maldives’ security needs, and we stand with them at every step.”

Echoing this sentiment, President Muizzu acknowledged India’s crucial role, stating, “India’s contribution to our maritime security is a key pillar for our safety.”

Digital and Trade Cooperation: Boosting Technology and Commerce

India-Maldives cooperation in the digital realm also gained a new dimension. The extension of UPI and RuPay services will benefit citizens of both nations, especially in tourism and trade. The discussion also included starting trade in local currencies, reducing dependency on foreign exchange, and strengthening commercial ties.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of digital cooperation, stating, “By linking Digital India with Maldives, we are creating a new chapter in the technology domain, which will benefit both our people and our commercial relations.”

A New Era in India-Maldives Relations

The agreements signed during this meeting will strengthen ties between the two nations. With financial assistance, infrastructure development, security, and digital cooperation, Maldives’ economy is set for a major transformation. Both Prime Minister Modi and President Muizzu emphasized their commitment to regional stability and continued collaboration for mutual development.

President Muizzu, in his concluding remarks, said, *”Our partnership with India is based on trust, mutual respect, and shared goals. Together, we will chart a future of prosperity and security for our nations.”*

The outcomes of this meeting not only solidify India-Maldives cooperation but also contribute to peace and security across the Indian Ocean region.
